Senior Citizens Await Railway Ticket Relief Ahead of Budget 2026

As Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman prepares to present the Union Budget on February 1, 2026, senior citizens across the country are hoping for long-awaited relief. Elderly railway passengers, in particular, are watching closely, as train travel has become more expensive following the recent fare hike announced by Indian Railways.

Train Fare Hike Adds to Senior Citizens’ Worries

Indian Railways increased passenger fares from December 26, 2025, especially for journeys longer than 215 kilometers. The fare revision has affected general, non-AC, and AC categories of mail and express trains. While the Railways expects to generate additional revenue through this move, the increase has placed an extra financial burden on passengers, especially retirees who travel frequently.

Ticket Concession Still Missing After COVID-19

One major concern for senior citizens is the continued absence of railway ticket concessions. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Indian Railways offered discounted fares to elderly passengers. These concessions were suspended in 2020 as a temporary measure due to falling passenger numbers and financial stress on the Railways.

Although normal operations have resumed and trains are once again running at full capacity, the concession has not been restored. This has caused disappointment and frustration among senior citizens who feel overlooked despite contributing to the system for decades.

How the Old Concession Helped Elderly Travelers

Before 2019, senior citizens received significant relief on ticket prices. Men aged 60 years and above were given a substantial discount, while women aged 58 years and above enjoyed even higher concessions. This benefit applied to premium trains as well, making long-distance journeys more affordable for elderly passengers.

Because of this facility, senior citizens could travel for medical care, family visits, and religious trips without worrying too much about high ticket costs.

Why the Issue Matters Today

After retirement, most senior citizens rely on fixed pensions or savings. Rising travel costs, combined with medical and living expenses, make budgeting difficult. For many elderly people, train travel is not a luxury but a necessity. The absence of ticket concessions has made essential travel more expensive and stressful.

Budget 2026 Raises Fresh Hope

With the Union Budget approaching, senior citizens are hopeful that the government will finally address this long-standing demand. Restoring the railway ticket concession would not only ease financial pressure but also send a strong message of care and respect toward elderly citizens.

Conclusion

As train fares rise and living costs increase, senior citizens are looking to Budget 2026 for meaningful support. If the railway ticket discount is brought back, it could benefit millions of elderly passengers and make train travel more affordable once again.
